When people talk about Mentoring they are referring to a particular relationship between two people, where a more experienced and knowledgeable person assists a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. The latter person being known as the Protégé or Apprentice, and the former knowledgeable person being known as the Mentor.

The mentor helps shape the outlook or attitude of their Protégé. Mentoring is an activity that not only addresses development of skills and talents, but can also promote spiritual development.

Two types of mentoring relationships exist: formal and informal.

Informal relationships develop on their own between partners.

Formal mentoring refers to a structured process supported by an organisation and addressed to specific individuals. There are several youth mentoring programs running all over the UK today, assisting at-risk children or youth who lack role models and sponsors.

In business, formal mentoring is where key employees, newly hired graduates, high potentials and future leaders are involved in a developmental programme to nurture and manage their talents with the assistance of an assigned Mentor.
