SAMPLE CHAPTER : Why Spy?

DESCRIPTION
This book shows everyday computer users how to become cyber-sleuths. It takes readers through the many different issues involved in spying on someone online. It begins with an explanation of reasons and ethics, covers the psychology of spying, describes computer and network basics, and takes readers step-by-step through many common online activities, and shows what can be done to compromise them. The book's final section describes personal privacy and counter-spy techniques. By teaching by both theory and example this book empowers readers to take charge of their computers and feel confident they can be aware of the different online activities their families engage in.

KEY SELLING POINTS
  • Expert authors have worked at Fortune 500 companies, NASA, CIA, NSA and all reside now at Sytex, one of the largest government providers of IT services.
  • Targets an area that is not addressed by other books: black hat techniques for computer security at the personal computer level.
  • Targets a wide audience: personal computer users, specifically those interested in the online activities of their families.

MARKET INFORMATION
The market for this book consists of average computer users who use the Internet for traditional everyday activities such as chat, web and e-mail. The technologies involved are PCs and laptops running Microsoft Windows. In 2002 Microsoft Windows had a 93.8% share of the home user market. This means the book should be accessible and deal with technology familiar with most home computer users.

TECHNOLOGY BACKGROUND
The technology involved covers two general areas. First it covers computer and Internet fundamentals such as standard hardware, standard software (Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer, Outlook, and AOL Instant Messenger) and the different things they can be used for. The book gives technical, but easy-to-understand descriptions of each, and how they work. This software, along with traditional PC hardware is found in about 93% of all homes. The second area of technology covered is the spy software that will be available from a web site. This software will be open source or freeware, so available to all readers, and enable the "spying" aspect of the book.
