It also introduces the UNIX shell environment, shell functionality, and text patterns. Additionally, this curriculum teaches end users a little about how UNIX works and handles resources. It shows how UNIX can be best used by advanced users in a UNIX-based enterprise. This course can even act as a starting primer for users interested in becoming administrators.

This curriculum consists of 2 courses:
- UNIX Part 1: User Fundamentals
- UNIX Part 2: Advanced Topics for Users

The UNIX Part 1: User Fundamentals course is the first in a series of courses on the UNIX operating system. It describes how to get started with UNIX, introducing the Common Desktop Environment (CDE) and the terminal window. It introduces files, directories, and printing and operations frequently performed on these. It teaches how to manipulate input and output, as well as how to compress and uncompress files. It also introduces the UNIX shell environment, shell functionality, and text patterns.

o Identify the features of X-windows.
o Identify the components of the Common Desktop Environment (CDE).
o Identify the command options used to change directories.
o Identify print commands for printing options in System V.
o Identify the functions of filters and pipes.

The UNIX Part 2:Advanced Topics for Users course in the UNIX curriculum teaches end users a little about how UNIX works and handles resources. Unix Part 1
Unit 1: Introduction to UNIX (1 - 2 hours)
o Identify the milestones in the development of UNIX.
o Identify the standards relating to UNIX.
o Identify the differences between working with windows and with shells.
o Identify the features of X-windows.
o Identify the differences between X-windows managers.
o Identify the components of the Common Desktop Environment (CDE).
o Log in and out of a UNIX system.
o Launch a basic application by using the CDE.
o Get help in the CDE.
o Identify the features of Mailer.
o Open a terminal from the CDE.
o Display information about UNIX users.
o Access a man page from the terminal window.

Unit 2: Files, Directories, and Printing (1 - 2 hours)
o Identify the components of the UNIX file tree.
o Identify the main file types.
o Identify the command options used to change directories.
o Identify the command options for listing directory contents.
o Create directories.
o Create files from the command line.
o Edit a simple file by using the vi editor.
o Identify commands that locate files from the command line.
o Copy a file from one directory to another.
o Remove a file from a directory.
o Identify the characteristics of users and groups.
o Control access to certain files in a UNIX system.
o Print a document from a Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) system.
o Identify print commands for printing options in System V.

Unit 3: Input, Output, and Compression (2 hours)
o Identify the characteristics of standard input, output, and error.
o Identify the functions of filters and pipes.
o Pipe a command.
o Compress a file by using the compress and gzip commands.
o Access a compressed file by using the uncompress and gunzip commands.

Unit 4: UNIX Shell Environment (2 hours)

o Identify ways of manipulating shell variables.
o Identify the features of shell startup sequences.
o Identify the ways in which you can edit the .profile login script.
o Create an alias.
o Identify ways of manipulating the command history.

o Search a string pattern by using the grep commands.
o Identify the functions of basic regular expressions.


Unix Part 2

o Restore a backup.
