Windows Vista Gaming Tips - Part Two
There are many features to your computer that you may find you don’t need when you are gaming.  The avid gamer wants the best overall comprehensive game experience during their gaming times, and Vista is able to help you out with that.  You also may find that no matter how hard you try, your games simply are not compatible with Vista. Knowing how to eliminate some of the fluff that is running on your computer while you are gaming, and how to maximize gaming compatibility, will ensure your gaming experience is exactly what you want it to be.  Here are a few tricks to help you run your games the way they should.

Disabling Background Features During Gaming.  The beauty of Windows Vista and all of its 3D capabilities, while pretty, can be irritating when you are gaming.  You can eliminate Vista 3D effects, or temporarily disable them, while you are gaming to ensure you get the best performance out of your games on Vista.  You will do this through the modification of their executable files on the Vista background and desktop.  While this sounds technical, it is very easy to do as Vista will allow you to place commands in your executables to disable 3D effects and run your games at maximum performance.  By nesting the commands in your executables, you only turn off Vista’s 3D features during the game, and not permanently.

To do this, first you must find the executable file for your game.  Go to your C:\ Directory and search for the game you want. You can also use Vista’s search functions for this.  Right click on the executable file once you have located it.  Choose “Properties”.  You will be prompted with a “Settings” heading.  Here you will see a box where you can check “Disable Visual Themes”.  Click “OK” and you are finished!  Now you can play your game without Vista’s 3D effects, without compromising those effects any other time you use the machine.

When Your Games Just Simply Aren’t Compatible with Vista. Sometimes it just happens, no matter how technically beautiful your operating system is.  If it hasn’t happened yet, there will come a time when a game is simply not compatible with your operating system. That being said, it’s not the end of the world. What you will do in this situation is run your games in Windows XP mode, through your Windows Vista.  This is a switch you will need to enable for specific and individual games, but it is easy to do, and will eliminate this problem.  Again, locate your game’s executable file in the same way you did above.  Choose “Properties” and click on the “Compatibility” tab.  Check the box for “Run This Program in Compatibility Mode for….” And locate the “Windows XP” selection through the drop-down menu that you see.  Click “OK”.

With these tips and tricks, you are now that much closer to the most amazing gaming experience Vista can offer.
