Follow these simple steps to set up your Gmail account with your Windows Vista Mail.
Step 1. Go to your Gmail account, and click on Settings link in the top right hand corner of the page. You will enter the yellow box menu. Click on the 5th link over titled “Forwarding and POP/IMAP”. In the bottom section, click the button that says “Enable IMAP”.
Step 2. Open your Windows Vista Mail, and select the Tools/Accounts tab. Click the button “Add”.
Step 3. You will be prompted to select what kind of account you want to add. Select “Email Account” and you will begin setting up your Gmail, a process very similar to setting up your Outlook Express email.
Step 4. Enter the name you want to appear as your display name for your email. When prompted for your email address, enter your gmail address. i.e. janedoe@gmail.com.
Step 5. You will then be brought to a screen where you set up your email servers. Here you want to tell Vista Mail to use gmail servers. For incoming server type, select IMAP from your pull-down menu, and enter the following:
Incoming: imap.gmail.com
Outgoing: smtp.gmail.com
You also need to check the box that says “Outgoing server requires authentication”.
Step 6. You will then be prompted to setup your logon information. Use your Gmail address and your password you are using for Gmail. Check the box that says “remember password” and also ensure that you check the box that says “Do Not Download Folders At This Time”.
Step 7. Hit the “Finish” button, and you will be brought back to your Internet Accounts screen. Verify that your ports are set as: Outgoing (SMTP): 587 and Incoming (IMAP) as 993. Select the IMAP tab and remove the check in the box “Store special folders on IMAP”, or you will find that all of your sent mail will be duplicated.
Step 8. Go back to your Windows Vista Mail, and hit “Send/Receive”. Your Gmail should be fully functioning on your Windows Vista Mail now!
