How to Set Your Desktop Background in Windows Vista
One of the best things about working with Windows Vista is that you can customize just about any feature or any aspect of the program, and how it makes your computer run, and look.  Again, Windows Vista is about being pretty, and making your computer experience what you want it to be.  One little thing we all like to do with our machines is personalize our desktop. While it may not be an integral function of how our computer runs, we do like to have something personal to look at whilst we are staring at our screen all day, every day.

With Windows Vista, you never have to rely on using Internet Explorer to set your background on your desktop. With your extensive Photo Gallery and Vista support of JPEG images, you don’t have to go through IE and right click to personalize your desktop. In fact, if you set your desktop the way Vista wants you to, your computer will actually run a little smoother. How do you do it? There are are a few ways.

Previous versions of Windows only allowed the use of BitMap (BMP) images for wallpaper or background settings.  Using your beautiful new Photo Gallery in Windows Vista, your control panel will work directly with you setting the JPEG or BMP photo that you want as your background.  If you decided to use a JPEG for your wallpaper, the control panel applet in Vista’s Photo Gallery will pre-scale the image to the size of your monitor screen. What this means is you won’t have to fret about squished, compressed, or stretched images any longer.

The first way you can do it is through the control panel on your desktop.  This will let you choose either a BMP or a JPEG graphic for your wallpaper.  Go to the Control Panel, and select Desktop settings.  You can select any of the following position types:

  • Fit to Screen – here your image will be scaled to fit your screen size.
  • Tile – the image will be repeated as many times as is necessary to fit your monitor
  • Center – your image will be shown in the center of your monitor.

This method is a standard method for selecting your desktop in any Windows version, however with Vista, you can use JPEGs for these methods.  The most efficient means of setting your desktop background however is through the Photo Gallery. Here your picture will be scaled precisely how it needs to be with no squishing or compressing.   Simply go to your Photo Gallery, select the image you want, and right-click on that image. Select “Set as Desktop Background”, and you are all set!
